| Emma Dodd wields words as creatively as she does her paintbrush in I Don’t Want a Posh Dog (Orchard, GBP10.99). ‘I don’t want a patterned dog. A jump-up-and-flatten dog/ I don’t want a handbag dog. A tail-not-meant-to-wag dog.’ With bouncing text and illustrations that bound off the page, this should win every award going. | The illustrations in this book are loads of fun! As are the rhymes which – aside from the last few pages – flowed incredibly well and would probably be super fun to read aloud! I liked the intent of the ending, and the sweetness that came along with it. But, I couldn’t help but feel a little… not five-star-ish… about the ‘stereotyping’ of the various dog breeds. Maybe this is far too picky of me, and I know it’s all in fun, but I love dogs and I had a hard time accepting that various breeds were ‘posh’ or ‘snappy’ ‘snooty’ or ‘never-happy…’ I think the final – very important – message could have been conveyed in a different way. |
