Cat,Squirrel,andDucksharebothanoldwhitecabininthewoodsandclearlydefineddutieswithregardtomakingpumpkinsoup.Catslicesthepumpkin,Squirrelstirsinthewater,andDuckaddsjustenoughsalt.OnedayDuckdecideshewantstostir,creatingsuchhouseholdconsternationandsomanyhardfeelingsthathefinallypackshiswheelbarrowandwaddlesaway.CatandSquirreltrytocarryon,butthesoupisn’tasgoodwithouttheirfriend’stouch.FinallyDuckreturns,andthethreeexperimentwithchangingroles.Theprocessisverymessy,butallagreethattheresulttastesasgoodasever.Cooper’srichlycoloredillustrations,renderedinwarm,autumnalhues,suggestasenseofsecuritythatwillassureeventheyoungestlistenerthatallwillendwell.Completewitharecipeforpumpkinsoup,thisshouldfindanicheinholidaystoryhoursandwithyoungfamilieslookingforseasonalprojects.KayWeisman–Thistextreferstoanoutofprintorunavailableeditionofthistitle.

Cooper(TheBoyWhoWouldn’tGotoBed,1997,etc.)triesforashaggy-dogstory,whosedetailsarelesscompellingthanpageafterpageofcharminglysnugillustrations.Deepintheforest,intheirsquash-likeabode,livethreelittlecreatures:acat,asquirrel,andaduck.Theyareaharmonioustrio,especiallywhentheyconcocttheirpumpkinsoup.Catdicesthepumpkin,Squirrelstirsinthewater,andDuckaddstheall-importantpipkinofsalt.ThenDuckdecidestotakeoverSquirrel’sresponsibilities.Squirreltellshimtotakeahike,whichthedisgruntledDuckdoes.Withouthistouchwiththesalt,however,thesoupisadisaster,andCatandSquirreljustplainmissDuck.Theysetouttofindhim,fret,fuss,worrythathe’sbeenhurt,orworse,foundnewfriends.Whentheydon’tfindhim,theyreturnhomecrestfallen,whereDuckiswaiting.Bothhisearlierdesertionandreturnfallwoefullyflat,butreaderswillbesmittenwithCooper’ssmartandutterlydisarmingartwork.(Picturebook.4-8)–Copyright©1999,KirkusAssociates,LP.Allrightsreserved.–Thistextreferstoanoutofprintorunavailableeditionofthistitle.
