Anna Grossnickle was born on July 13, 1946, in Cincinnati, the eldest of seven children of Earl Stanton and Ruth Marie (Putnam) Grossnickle. The Grossnickles lived in Ohio for the first eleven years of Anna’s life before moving to Los Angeles. In the midst of studies at San Fernando Valley State College (now California State University at Northridge), Anna Grossnickle married Steve Carlton in 1965. Together they had two daughters: Bethany and Sarah. The Carltons divorced in 1973. Anna remarried in 1976, and she and husband Gary Hines have had one daughter together: Lassen. After graduating from Northridge, Anna G. Hines embarked on a career in teaching. For several years in the late 1960s, she taught preschool before receiving her Elementary Education Credential at Pacific Oaks College in 1974. She also received a Master’s degree from the same institution in 1978. In that year she left formal education pursuits to turn to her original life’s goal: illustrating and writing children’s books, despite the discouragement she had received from college professors about likelihood of success in the children’s book publishing industry.

After one reading this became our oldest grandchilds favorite book at the age of two. His mother says its because his Daddy does all the things that the daddy in the book does — shops for dinner, plays batman, tickles and hides, and carries Teddy (in the story its Corey) to bed. Theres no such thing as a book being too advanced to read to a small child. You adjust the story as you go along. And this is the greatest story, with a naturalness and charm that even adults will enjoy.

PreSchool-Grade 2 Corey is a child in an ideal family. After his father picks him up at the day-care center, they shop for dinner and prepare supper. Spaghetti is piping hot when Mom arrives from her job. Then Daddy gets Corey ready for bed, and the happy threesome share a picture book and kisses. For many adults the story probably verges on fantasy, but preschoolers will find the tale reassuring. In fact, they will probably wish their own fathers would don shower cap and towel to turn into Bathman or use pajama feet for dog ears. The pictures, predominately in shades of pink, yellow and blue, are as soothing as the text, and the uncluttered rooms and spotless clothes contribute to an idealized vision of family life that many may desire but few achieve.
