Publishers Weekly A sturdy format gives classic Tomie dePaola nursery rhymes and bedtime stories staying power. Tomie’s Three Bears and Other Tales, adapted from Tomie dePaola’s Favorite Nursery Tales, contains retellings aimed at youngest fans of the titular story as well as “The Little Red Hen” and “The Three Little Pigs.” Fans may recognize the signature artwork in Tomie’s Baa, Baa, Black Sheep and Other Rhymes, which features “Jack and Jill,” “Little Miss Muffet” and “Hey, Diddle Diddle” along with the title rhyme. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information. Children’s Literature The three bears looking out from the cover—with Goldilocks hiding behind them—are intriguing. Papa Bear looks most unhappy, but the others have smiles. The story and the illustrations are pretty much the way I heard the story when I was growing up, so that was an enjoyable surprise. Goldilocks is the only one who appears strange; she looks like a bald-headed boy in a dress with a wig plopped on. The second story is the one about the Little Red Hen, and it has always been a favorite. In this version, the hen does all of the work to get flour to bake a beautiful loaf of bread. All of her lazy friends get their due when she shares the bread with her chicks and not them. In the Three Little Pigs, the brothers all survive and the wolf is chased away—no one is seriously harmed. The tale loses some of its impact as a lesson but it is probably more acceptable to the board book audience. DePaola’s amusing illustrations are presented on crisp white backgrounds in a book that should stand up to the many re-readings it is bound to have. 2004 (orig. 1986), Putnam/Penguin, Ages 1 to 4. —Marilyn Courtot
